A log crackled and broke in the grate of the fireplace in The Drunken Cat, sending a shower of glowing embers spiraling up the chimney like fireflies into the night. With a sigh of satisfaction, Stefanie Alteryn propped her booted feet on a stool near the fender as she sank into a cushioned chair that was reserved for her. Though others were allowed to enjoy its comfort, everyone knew that when a Bard walked into a tavern their seat was to be vacated immediately.
Gilles stood behind the bar, polishing glasses in preparation of the evening to come. He had just brought in a fresh keg of porter ale and tapped it, declaring it to be outstanding after running off the extra carbonation and sampling his brew. A striped cat sauntered through the door and hopped up onto the scarred surface of the wooden bar to wash its paws.
"So what will it be tonight?" Gilles called over to Stefanie as he swapped out one towel for another.
"Hmmm..." the Bard replied as she began tuning her lute. "The sky is already overcast, and there is a storm brewing if I didn't mistake the clouds coming in. It will be a perfect night for a mix of music to chase away any damp spirits, don't you think?"
The cat jumped off the bar and padded over to Stefanie, then extended his front paws to reach Stefanie's ankles. The cat stretched and flexed, almost but not quite prickling through her boot leather. "Oh, really?" Stefanie said to the cat with an amused tone. "You have other ideas?" She reached down to pat the cat's back, which he took as an invitation to jump up into her lap. The cat turned his emerald eyes to her and uttered a plaintive "meow" and tilted his head.
"Ahhhhh...." Stefanie answered the cat as she set her lute aside. "You're right, this is a night for slower pursuits." She gave the cat some long strokes from ears to tail, sending him into an ecstasy of deep purrs. "Perhaps I should pull out some older material. How about a ghost story?"
As if answering a loud clap of thunder rumbled across the skies outside, and the cat perked his ears. "There's the answer," Gilles called over, a wide grin on his face. "Tapping a new keg of ale, a stormy night, and a tale of spirits should fill the place!"
