Over the next few days we're going to take a step back from everything else and fill in some gaps that have become clear as we've watched people playtest. Here are the concerns, and we're going to address them via quests.
We watched someone who has never played a MUD before go around asking mobs things like "who are you", "how do I fish", "where is so-and-so", etc. Another playtester wanted to know if he was in the tutorial when he logged in for the first time. Someone else mentioned that it would be nice if the non-repeatable quests gave high exp rewards and cash since they are a one-shot deal for completion.
After discussion, here's what we're going to do -- and please give us feedback on both concept and implementation as we go, as usual!
The retired hero in the city of Braem is going to be set to two levels. If you're under level 3 he'll advise you to do the quests marked 'Tutorial' before doing anything else. If you're over level 3 he won't say as much, as it stands to reason that the player behind the character already has the hang of basic mechanics and he doesn't need to spam you as soon as you walk into his room. The tutorial quests will be non-repeatable and will be things that teach a new player how to navigate through a MUD type of system by immersing them into the culture. For example, the first quest will be to go find Mother Anya in the southwest corner of the city, which helps teach navigation, mob identification, mob function, and also gets the new character a basic gear set if needed. Each tutorial quest will be worth 50 gold and 500 exp, and there will be 10 of them. Additional quests that are not marked as tutorials will be available for higher level/more experienced adventurers.
That's the concept and what we'll be working on starting in a few hours. We expect it to take us a few days, and then once it's all done, we'll get back to other fixes/additions.
Thanks for all you do, and we'll see you in the game!
