As per discussion with the boss earlier today, here are a few references to various portable water containers found throughout the series:
In TFOH (chapter 8), Nyn is offered a leather water bottle by Juilin.
EOTW has Elyas handling a leather waterbag.
There's a leather bottle mentioned in TGH, as well as TSR when Lan hands Egwene one when they enter the Waste. It has a stopper.
So it would seem that leather waterbags/bottles are fairly common ways of transporting water for personal use.
For a little historical perspective, canteens have been in use for thousands of years. I suppose the concept of 'let's use this hollow thing to hold water' would have branched out from drinking gourds. The Spanish used a wineskin called a 'bota bag', which was a wide goatskin bag with a narrow opening (basically teardrop shaped) with a carrying strap. 'Mashk' is an Indian item that appears to serve the same purpose as a bota.
So in conclusion, seeing as how our time period is both the far future and distant past of our own world (and is the sum of all cultures that have been or will be), just about anything is proper for the lore. I would think that some kind of leathern water container (leather bottle, hide waterskin, leather waterbag) would be appropriate.
Hope this helps!

And with that, a leather-wrapped bottle is now replacing all waterskins in the game. That should solve the problem with the keywords changing due to hard code. Thank you, Garen! You are awesome!
